Grand Valley State University. Student Senate

Administrative History

Grand Valley State University's Student Senate is comprised of 50 students elected to one-year terms. Each Senator may serve on one of seven different committees. The committees are Senate Resources, Finance, Campus Affairs, Educational Affairs, Diversity Affairs, External Relations, and Public Relations. All seven committees work to enhance student life, academics and the overall student experience at Grand Valley.

Student Senate works to investigate and resolve common student problems; advocate for the inclusion of students in the overall policy and decision-making processes of the university community; promote awareness of the role students play in the academic community; enhance the quality and scope of education at the university both inside and outside the classroom; and empower students with leadership opportunities.
Administrative History The United Collegiate Organization (UCO) charter was adopted May 13, 1964 as an all-Campus student government organization to regulate student activities. Its primary committee was the Cultural and Social Council. In 1970, it reorganized into three groups to spread the workload. The community Forum was the vehicle for discussions of problems and issues with the power to pass resolutions; The Community Council was the policy recommending body regarding student affairs and community life. The Executive Committee on Community Life and Activities (ExCo) calls meetings and sets the agenda of the Community Council. The Student Activities Budget Fee Committee, Committee on Campus Life, and Committee on Campus Activities operate under ExCo and the Community Council.
