The Science and Mathematics Division of GVSU initiated the Update Seminars in 1985, with the purpose of bringing K-12 science and mathematics teachers together with Grand Valley faculty to discuss issues and concerns about science and mathematics education. The gatherings were named after a newsletter, Science Update, which Dr. Howard Stein published and distributed to the K-12 community. The program was overwhelmingly successful during the 1980s and 1990s. In 2001, the Fall event became the Fall Science Update Seminar and focused on Science education. The Mathematics department at the time was hosting a Math in Action Conference, which was combined with the Fall mathematics Update. In 2009, the fall program changed again to become a full day mini-conference. A full history of the program is available in the collection.
