Biographical Note

Irene Louise ("Babs") Fassbender Sparhawk was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on 7 July 1928. Her parents were John Christian Fassbender (1903-1976) and Irene Alice Waldron Fassbender (1902-1989). Irene was an only child. John C. Fassbender was employed variously as an automobile salesman, garage owner, steam fitter, and wholesale trade.

In 1930 Irene was staying with her parents at her grandmother's (Clara Fassbender) house in Marquette, Michigan, but in 1940 she was living with her parents in Viroqua, Wisconsin. Within a few years she and her family returned to Marquette where they resided at 616 North Front Street. Irene graduated from Graveraet High School on 6 June 1946. She then attended Northern Michigan College of Education (now Northern Michigan University) in Marquette, where she received her bachelor's degree and teacher's certificate. She subsequently taught in the Royal Oak, Michigan, school system for a number of years. She married John Burt Sparhawk, Jr. (1928-2001) on July 7, 1956 in Marquette, Michigan, and resided in Warren and later Royal Oak. She and her husband had three children: Sally (born 1961), John B. Sparhawk III (born 1963), and Michael Christian Sparhawk (1967-2002). After their retirement in 1987, Irene and John moved back to Marquette. She died on 23 February 2012 and is buried, along with her husband and son, in Park Cemetery, Marquette, Michigan.
