Scope and Contents

Series contains records relating to bilingual education training at Grand Valley State Colleges between the years of 1971 and 1979. Files include program proposals, correspondence and memoranda, administrative files, CVs and biographical information about program directors and instructors, and information about student teachers and courses. The records also document grant-funded projects, as well as initiatives such as the Right To Read program.

Conditions Governing Access

Collection is open for research use. Materials may be accessed by request at Special Collections and University Archives in Seidman House. Materials do not circulate.

Administrative History

The Educational Studies Institute (ESI) received accreditation in 1968 from the Michigan State Board and began operating at Grand Valley in 1971 as a teacher preparatory program. National accreditation was received in 1974. It is now called the College of Education. As part of its curriculum, the ESI organized a bilingual education training program for Spanish as part of its Secondary Education Teacher Certification minor.
