Dorothy (“Dot”) Clara Goodrich Patterson Huff was born in Owosso, Shiawassee County, Michigan on 6 February (or 16 May), 1912 (or 1913). Her parents were William Rufus Goodrich (1879-1967) and Claudine Ethel Ward Goodrich (1885-1933) who married in June 1909. William attended the University of Michigan, and graduated with an AB degree in 1905 and was awarded the AM degree in 1906. He was employed as the general manager of the Arthur Ward Company, purveyors of furniture and hardware in Owosso. The family owned a summer cottage at Crystalia on Crystal Lake, Benzie County, Michigan. Dorothy had one sister, Wilma Goodrich Cobb (1915-1971). Dorothy graduated from Owosso High School and matriculated at the University of Michigan in September 1931. While there she evidently met and married a fellow freshman, Frederick Griswold Patterson (1911-1998) on 29 March 1932. She gave birth to a son, Frederick G. Patterson [Jr.?] in late 1932. Dorothy divorced her husband in February 1933, citing extreme cruelty and non-support; however custody of their child was awarded to Frederick. Dorothy subsequently married Adelbert Orville Huff (1909-1992) on 22 February 1934. At the time he was a salesman working for Dorothy’s father at the Arthur Ward Co. Their first child, Valerie Kean Huff Schweiss was born on 23 August 1934. Twin daughters, Gaylene and Penelope Goodrich Huff, were born on 11 September 1935; however the latter, severely underweight and unable to take nourishment, died eighteen days later on 29 September 1935. Adelbert served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, reaching the rank of lieutenant before being discharged. Dorothy and Adelbert divorced on 28 November 1949. Dorothy died in Owosso in November 1967 and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Owosso, Michigan with her parents and sister.
